Reformed Baptists
AN EXAMINATION

What's in a name? We invite you to join us as we take an in-depth look at what it means to be Reformed Baptists. More specifically, what it means for us, Salem Reformed Baptist. Is it simply a label? Or do the church traditions and Reformers of our past still play a role in helping us navigate the present, and prepare for the future? Should we strive to adapt to the culture of our day, following today's trends instead of tradition, as we see occurring in so many modern day churches?

Join us as we explore these critical questions and more.

The Doctrines of Grace: Total Depravity (Part I)

In our sermon this week, we jump back into our series on an examination of what it means to be a Reformed Baptist. One of the fundamental aspects of being Reformed is treasuring the Doctrines of Grace. The Doctrines of Grace themselves are an exposition of Sola Gratia (Grace Alone) and Soli Deo Gloria (God's Glory Alone) which we find in the Five Solas. The Doctrines of Grace themselves, better known as The Five Points of Calvinism and the oft recited acronym TULIP, have been points, no pun intended, of ongoing contention in Christian circles. But are the five points some ugly monster that is imposed in the Bible by force in order to remove the will of man as is often claimed? Or are they actually biblical realities found in scripture? Are humans initially born innocent in the eyes of God? Or are we tainted by sin from the beginning? Is it possible to give God the glory He is due unless we first understand just how hellish and deplorable our natural condition is? Join us this week for Part I of our examination of "Total Depravity," or the "T" in TULIP, as we attempt to answer these questions and more. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Visit Salem Reformed Baptist on the web at: https://www.salemreformedbaptist.org on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/salemreformedbaptist on YouTube at: https://www.youtube.com/@salemreformedbaptist on SermonAudio at: http://www.sermonaudio.com/go/SalemReformedBaptist Our sermons can also be found on Apple Podcasts & Spotify - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - This sermon was delivered on January 8th 2023 by Pastor Gustavo Barros at Salem Reformed Baptist in Salem, Oregon.

The Doctrines of Grace: Total Depravity (Part II)

In this week’s sermon we continue with our broader examination of the Doctrines of Grace, also known as The Five Points of Calvinism. On this Lord’s Day we return to our study on the first point, the doctrine of “Total Depravity,” or what is commonly known as the “T” in the acronym TULIP. Today Pastor Gustavo has us turn our attention to scripture found in the New Testament on the heels of last week’s introduction and Old Testament examples. Is the oft referred to, kinder & gentler, New Testament in agreement with this doctrine of depravity? More importantly, as some would suggest, are Jesus’ “red-letter words” and teachings in agreement? Or is this doctrine something we simply encounter in the Old Testament? What, if anything, do we bring to the table concerning our salvation? It is our prayer that you’ll join us for Part II of our examination on "Total Depravity," as we attempt to answer these questions and more. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Visit Salem Reformed Baptist on the web at: https://www.salemreformedbaptist.org on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/salemreformedbaptist on YouTube at: https://www.youtube.com/@salemreformedbaptist on SermonAudio at: http://www.sermonaudio.com/go/SalemReformedBaptist Our sermons can also be found on Apple Podcasts & Spotify - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - This sermon was delivered on January 15th, 2023 by Pastor Gustavo “Guga” Barros at Salem Reformed Baptist in Salem, Oregon.

The Doctrines of Grace: Unconditional Election (Part III)

In our Lord’s Day message this week we conclude our look at the doctrine of Unconditional Election. As the second point, or the “U” in the well-known acronym TULIP, Unconditional Election is often viewed as one of the more controversial Doctrines of Grace (Five Points of Calvinism). Over the past couple of weeks, as we’ve been seeing, those who are opposed to the doctrine of Unconditional Election must contend with numerous passages throughout Scripture that support it. Is it fair for God to only choose to save some? Do we deserve Mercy? Are we saved or elect even if our lives don’t reflect, and aren’t being conformed to the image of Christs? Does Jesus pray for everyone? What about how this doctrine should apply to our lives? To our sanctification and responsibilities as Christians? We pray that you’ll join us for “The Doctrines of Grace: Unconditional Election (Part III)” as we focus in on New Testament examples that will attempt to answer these questions and more! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Visit Salem Reformed Baptist on the web at: https://www.salemreformedbaptist.org on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/salemreformedbaptist on YouTube at: https://www.youtube.com/@salemreformedbaptist on SermonAudio at: http://www.sermonaudio.com/go/SalemReformedBaptist Our sermons can also be found on Apple Podcasts & Spotify - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - This sermon was delivered on February 5th, 2023 by Pastor Gustavo “Guga” Barros at Salem Reformed Baptist in Salem, Oregon.

The Doctrines of Grace: Limited Atonement (Part I)

This week we resume our series on what it means to be Reformed Baptists. Our focus now turns to the third point, or the “L” in the well-known acronym TULIP, which stands for “Limited Atonement.” Of the Doctrines of Grace, also known as the Five Points of Calvinism, Limited Atonement is likely the most crucial and controversial. If you’ve ever heard someone make the statement, “I’m a 4 point Calvinist!” instead of holding to all 5 points, it is highly likely it is the doctrine of Limited Atonement that they take issue with. With this in mind, and given its centrality and import, our next few sermons will be focused on examining this doctrine. Did Jesus really die for the whole world? Was His death universal, for all people, including those who find themselves suffering for eternity in Hell? Or was Jesus sent to die for a select, or chosen group of people, His chosen people? Is there a Trinitarian aspect to redemption? The Doctrines of Grace: Limited Atonement (Part II)

Continuing our examination of Limited Atonement, this week we set out to properly define this key doctrine as well as address some common objections. As the third point of the Doctrines of Grace (Five Points of Calvinism) Limited Atonement, or the “L” in the acronym TULIP, is often the most controversial. As you watch this week ask yourself, “What was the purpose of Jesus’ death?” Did Jesus die for all people, or just some people? Was his death universal, for the whole world? A atoning death for all people, including those who find themselves suffering eternity in Hell? Do individuals like Rob Bell, or those with a Universalist or Arminian viewpoint have it right? Was Christ’s death powerful and sufficient to achieve salvation, or is salvation conditioned by a choice we must first make? The Doctrines of Grace: Limited Atonement (Part III)

Our survey on Limited Atonement continues this week with our third part on this core doctrine. As the third point of the Doctrines of Grace, also known as the “Five Points of Calvinism,” Limited Atonement, or the “L” in the acronym TULIP, is often considered the most controversial. But as we will see, the doctrine of Limited Atonement was not merely the machinations of some 16th or 17th century believers, but rather it is the only logical outflow of God’s election. In fact, the whole drama of redemption tells one coherent story of a God who chose His people to be saved by one definite sacrifice with one particular high priest. So that is where we start this week, at the beginning of the Old Testament and concluding in the New, as we examine scripture that verifies this doctrine. The Doctrines of Grace: Perseverance of the Saints (Part I)

As we continue our series on what It means to be “Reformed Baptist.” This week our focus turns to the fifth and final point of the Doctrines of Grace, also known as The Five Points of Calvinism. This fifth point is the “P” in the well-known acronym TULIP and stands for “Perseverance of the Saints.” The doctrine of the Perseverance of the Saints can be a hard one for many people to accept. This is especially true in modern American Christian culture where all one needs to do to be “saved” is proclaim or profess faith in Christ once, and “really-really mean it!” Then they’re free to continue living however they deem fit; nothing can ever cause them to lose their salvation. Is that true though? Is it biblical? We pray you’ll join us for “The Doctrines of Grace: Irresistible Grace (Part I)” as we attempt to answer this fundamental question about true salvation and more! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Visit Salem Reformed Baptist on the web at: https://www.salemreformedbaptist.org on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/salemreformedbaptist on YouTube at: https://www.youtube.com/@salemreformedbaptist on SermonAudio at: http://www.sermonaudio.com/go/SalemReformedBaptist Our sermons can also be found on Apple Podcasts, Google, Spotify, Pandora, Stitcher, and others. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - This sermon was delivered on April 30th, 2023 by Pastor Gustavo “Guga” Barros at Salem Reformed Baptist in Salem, Oregon.

The Doctrines of Grace: Perseverance of the Saints (Part II)

Continuing our series on what it means to be “Reformed Baptist” we find ourselves taking a closer look at the doctrine of the “Perseverance of the Saints.” As the final point, or the “P” in the acronym TULIP, Perseverance of the Saints is a fundamental belief inseparably linked from the other Doctrines of Grace (Five Points of Calvinism). After spending last week defining this doctrine and examining what it does and doesn’t mean, we now turn to the Old & New Testaments in search of examples that verify whether this doctrine is right and true. Please join us this week for our message titled “The Doctrines of Grace: The Perseverance of the Saints (Part II)” as we turn to the scriptures for assurance that God, in His ḥeseḏ (steadfast love), will indeed empower His Christian Saints to run the marathon of life. Perseverance ensures those who are His will, in fact, persevere through trial & tribulation, growing in sanctification all the way to the finish line. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - This sermon was delivered on May 7th, 2023 by Pastor Gustavo “Guga” Barros at Salem Reformed Baptist in Salem, Oregon.

The Doctrines of Grace: Perseverance of the Saints (Part III)

This Mother’s Day we conclude our studies on the Doctrines of Grace, or the “Five Points of Calvinism,” with our third and final installment on the “Perseverance of the Saints.” Perseverance of the Saints, sometimes also referred to as the “Preservation of the Saints,” is the final letter, or “P” in the acronym TULIP. In our preceding sermons we defined this doctrine, and last week we began to see it verified in the Old & New Testaments. This week we wrap up our survey in the New Testament & Jesus’ teachings. Having now charted this doctrine from Genesis to Revelation, we conclude with a final point of application. We pray you’ll join us this week for our sermon titled, “The Doctrines of Grace: The Perseverance of the Saints (Part III),” as we look to the God who is faithful to finish the work He started, the Almighty Father who will ensure His chosen saints persevere to the end. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - This sermon was delivered on May 14th, 2023 by Pastor Gustavo “Guga” Barros at Salem Reformed Baptist in Salem, Oregon.
Further Reflections on Being Reformed

Further Reflections on Being Reformed

This Sunday we conclude our study on what it means to be “Reformed” with some final further reflections before turning our attention to what it means to be “Baptist” next week. For some, being Reformed means that one must embrace Covenant Theology. Others still might say that in order to be Reformed you must subscribe fully to the “Three Forms of Unity,” adhere to the Regulative Principle of Worship, or fully embrace all of Calvin’s teachings. But is that truly what it means to be Reformed? So often we hear the saying “doctrine divides,” but is that true? Can doctrine instead unite us? Are some matters of biblical doctrine, what some would call, “first, second, & third-level theological issues,” more critical than others? Do they affect our salvation? Please join us this week for our sermon titled, “Further Reflections on Being Reformed,” as we look to answer these questions, and obey the command of our Lord Jesus to preserve the precious unity of His church, a church He bought with His own blood. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - This sermon was delivered on May 21st, 2023 by Pastor Gustavo “Guga” Barros at Salem Reformed Baptist in Salem, Oregon.
